Barcelona – Inter 2-0

Inter is a big club with big ambitions, but little potential was on display Tuesday against a clinical Barcelona that operated at a different level. Inter chased shadows for most of the game, always a step or two behind the pace set by Barca’s magisterial, phenomenal midfield duo of Xavi and Iniesta.

The result does not reflect the difference in class between the two clubs, but it was plain to see over the two legs. Inter lacked punching power, hardly giving Barcelona anything to be concerned about. Even with Wesley Sneijder missing, Inter did not create any chances for Diego Milito and Samuel Eto’o on his return to Nou Camp. Instead, Inter’s presence in the first half was dismal, unable to build anything, often unable to bring the ball out of its own half. Barca enjoyed long possessions and permanent control.

Because of Rubin’s home draw against Dynamo Kiev, Inter is still in a good position to move on in the Champions League, but judging by its performances at group stage – not only tonight – Inter cannot be a serious contender for winning the tournament. Rubin will come to Milano determined to play its chances and Inter, while in control of its fate, cannot feel good about its game at the moment. Even if everything goes well, surely Moratti and Mourinho must bring in reinforcements during January’s transfer window.

For Barcelona, yet another spectacular performance, plus Messi and Ibra were rested. Perfect momentum to bring into Sunday’s super-clasico.
