Knock-Out Phase Kicks Off with Decisively Latin American Flavor

All five South American teams that entered the tournament advanced to the Round of 16, with four of the five winning their respective group – Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil. Only Chile came in second in Group H. It is conceivable that South America will have four representatives in the quarterfinals as the only all-South American clash in this round is Brazil-Chile. Add Mexico to the mix and the impression is clearly one of Latin American futbol dominance. Argentina will take on Mexico as favorites for the second straight World Cup, while Uruguay and Paraguay also have a very good chance of progressing. Uruguay faces South Korea and Paraguay takes on Japan.

In stark contrast to Latin America’s achievements, Europe has suffered its worst showing in the group stage since the World Cup was expanded to 32 teams. Only six of its 13 participants made it through the group stage, with 2006 finalists France and Italy the biggest name casualties. Europe’s numbers will definitely be reduced to three by the quarterfinal stage as they all play each other. Germany takes on England, Holland meets Slovakia, while Spain faces off against Portugal.

Up-and-coming USA has been magnificent in winning Group C, showing not only tremendous spirit and commitment but also great ability. The Americans will take on Ghana, the only African team to advance (out of five), with the winner facing either Uruguay or South Korea, an excellent opportunity to get to the semifinal. Two Asian teams deservedly advanced to the Round of 16, Japan and South Korea, both with good chances to go further. How did 91minute predictions fare?
