Egypt on top in Africa

A late goal by super-sub of the tournament Gedo provided The Pharaohs a good measure of redemption after missing out on the World Cup. The victory restored the wounded Egyptian pride and sent the masses into the streets of Cairo and Gaza to revel in the occasion. It was Egypt’s third consecutive African Cup of Nations title and seventh overall, an incredible performance that will be hard to match. Congratulations to the North African team.

Ghana played well in the final and created most of the chances, but Egypt’s impressive goal came against the run of play in the 85th minute. Gedo scored FIVE goals coming of the bench during Egypt’s winning run, a la Toto Schillacci in the 1990 World Cup in Italy. Egypt’s title was a collective effort, the team playing without yesterday’s stars Zaki and Mido. It could have easily gone Ghana’s way. With the mercurial Essien missing and with a good number of young players having acquired precious experience in this tournament, Ghana will be ready for South Africa and beyond as the next generation comes together.

Nigeria finished third by defeating Algeria 1-0 in the consolation match. On an absurd note, CAF prsident Issa Hayatou suspended Togo from the next two competitions for leaving the tournament after the team’s bus was shot by guerillas, resulting in deaths and injuries. Ludicrous, even if it won’t stick. TIA.
